Additional information

Your steps to reproduce don’t make sense. You also didn’t follow the template in full.

Array expects an argument even in normal latex, it should be

$$
\begin{array}{}
a=0
b=0
\end{array}
$$

If you don’t pass it the {} the first macro/character becomes the argument thus hiding the a

An `array` environment needs a column specification. Try:

$$

\begin{array}{l}

a=0\\

b=0

\end{array}

$$

Use `{c}` or `{r}` if you want centered or right-aligned columns. Without the `{l}` (or another column preamble), MathJax can treat the first character as part of the missing preamble, which is why `a` disappears.
