Hi all! I’d like to share **Lamplit** (青灯夜读, “reading by lamplight”), a theme I’ve been building for my own notes. It puts nine palettes into one theme, 23 schemes in all, and you pick one scheme for dark mode and another for light mode, from any palette you like.

![lamplit-highlights-lite](https://forum.obsidian.md/uploads/default/original/3X/9/3/93050163c8ff4db0d65ceb23700af95a00675cab.gif)

**What’s different**

- **Some palettes change shape, not just color.** Bauhaus has square corners and solid highlights. Tuttomondo draws heavy outlines and hard shadows, with solid tags and highlights.

- **Obsidian’s own colors follow the scheme too.** Mermaid diagrams (all nine types, on Obsidian 1.15’s new renderer as well), colored highlights, canvas cards and connectors, the graph view, and the accent color in menus and buttons.

- **Reading view and Live Preview look the same.** Headings, code, tables, quotes, tags, highlights and links match. I check this with an automated test across every scheme.

- **File type icons** in the file explorer, and an optional **Color Folders** mode.

- **Chinese-first typography** , which works just as well for English.

- **The same palettes for Typora** , if you also write there.

**The palettes**

| **Palette** | **Dark** | **Light** | **After** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Wonderland | Underground, Office District | Lab | Murakami’s _Hard-Boiled Wonderland_: ink black and a single brass accent |
| Merino | Dark | Light | The Merino terminal themes (GitHub Primer colors) |
| Big Wave | Pipeline | Spray | The cover of Tatsuro Yamashita’s _Big Wave_ (1984) |
| Impression | Havre | Brume | Monet’s _Impression, Sunrise_: grey-green mist and one orange sun |
| Bauhaus | Weimar | Dessau | The three primaries, solid blocks, square corners |
| Shanghai | Bund | Wukang | The two banks of the Huangpu: the Bund’s gold, the east bank’s glass |
| Tuttomondo | Subway | Pisa | The 1989 mural _Tuttomondo_ in Pisa: bright colors inside heavy outlines |
| TokyoNight | Storm, Night, Moon | Day | The official tokyonight.nvim palette |
| Catppuccin | Mocha, Macchiato, Frappé | Latte | The official Catppuccin palette |

**Get started**

1. Install **Lamplit** from **Settings → Appearance → Themes → Manage**.

2. Install the **Style Settings** plugin.

3. Open **Settings → Style Settings → Lamplit** and pick a **Dark Mode Scheme** and a **Light Mode Scheme**.

Without Style Settings you get Wonderland. Lamplit needs Obsidian 1.14.4 or later.

**Good to know**

- On macOS, Obsidian uses native menus by default, and themes can’t style them. Turn off **Settings → Interface → Advanced → Native menus** to see themed menus.

- Color Folders colors top-level folders by position, so adding a folder shifts the colors after it.

The separate dark and light scheme picker is the part that stands out to me, since most themes force a single matching pair. Pairing Merino Dark with Havre Brume for light mode seems like a sensible mix. The Bauhaus and Tuttomondo shape changes are an interesting idea, though I wonder how solid highlights hold up against colored text in reading view. Does the automated test cover contrast for each dark/light combination, or only that the styles render consistently between Reading view and Live Preview?

Thanks for taking a close look!

Small correction on the pairing: Havre and Brume are the two halves of Impression, Havre being the dark one and Brume the light one. So the mix you describe would be Merino Dark with Impression Brume, and yes, that works fine. Any dark scheme can go with any light scheme.

On contrast: the test checks each scheme on its own, not each dark/light combination. Since Obsidian only ever shows one mode at a time, a pairing can’t create a contrast problem that the two schemes don’t already have separately. For every scheme, the test measures text against its actual background: body text, headings, links, unresolved links, quotes, code, tags, table text, callout titles, and highlighted text, including links inside highlights. It flags anything below 4.3:1 for accent colors and 3:1 for faint text such as H6. It also checks Mermaid labels against the shapes they sit on. Reading view and Live Preview consistency is a separate check in the same run.

Solid highlights in Bauhaus and Tuttomondo use dark text on the bright fill, about 13:1 in Tuttomondo and 10–12.5:1 in Bauhaus. Your question made me test the edge case, and you were right to ask: a link inside a solid highlight kept its link color, which dropped to around 2:1 in the dark variants. Lamplit 1.9.3 fixes it. Links and inline code inside any highlight now take the highlight’s text color, with an underline for links, in both Reading view and Live Preview. Colored highlights (==🔴…==) aren’t solid; they use a translucent tint of the scheme’s color.

The two official palettes, TokyoNight Day and Catppuccin Latte, fall below those thresholds in a few places. I’ve kept them as they are upstream rather than change the official colors.
