Journal Folder — major updates after a quiet stretch
I am not planning on being too verbose in this topic. I did want to create some awareness of my plugin though as I have made major changes after a long stretch of no movement, and this form seems to be the ideal place to do that.
Journal Folder turns any folder in your vault into a journal. Run as many independent journals as you like, each with its own settings. I am primarily maintaining this plugin for my own usage, but believe many members of the Obsidian community will find it valuable. I have added many features to enhance the journaling experience, a lot of these derived from my bullet journaling journey.
Disclaimer, a lot of the latest features have been developed with the help of Claude. The reason that no additional features were added to this plugin for so long was simply a lack of capacity. The world of AI has changed that and provided me the ability to add the features that I have always wanted. I am a software developer by profession though, and the core architecture was put in place by myself, not Claude. I am in control of my code base.
Some of the features that are freshly added include:
- Embedded Calendar — The journal header now includes an embedded calendar for among others easy navigation. This calendar can be toggled or permanently switched off if it is not to your liking.
- Side Panels — Two side panels were added to the toolset to improve your experience and make it easy to manage and navigate folders.
- Configuration enhancements — All configuration can now be performed using either the standard global configuration views for global config, or the Journal Folder side panel for folder based config and overrides. This is now the preferred way of maintaining not only global configuration, but also folder based config.
- Signifiers — A concept inspired by the BUJO world, bind an icon to a tag and it appears in the left margin wherever the tag does. Reading view and live preview.
- Tasks — Tasks are now a first class citizen. Once again, the way that tasks are handled in inspired by how task management is handled in the BUJO world.
- Task migration — Roll unfinished tasks between notes bullet-journal style,
with an automatic reference trail. - Note-based templates — Templating of notes are now baked into the system. Journal Folder also place nice with other templating plugins should the user so desire.
