Is there a way (maybe a plugin?) to close a file without closing the pane?

As part of giving Obsidian more permanent always-showing screen space in my setup, I’ve been starting to work with a multi-pane setup more than before.

One thing troubles me though: closing a file is the same as closing a pane, and every time I’m done with whatever editing task I’m doing and don’t want these notes to show, I have to close all the panes and do the split again.
With the Workspace core plugin I can recreate my default split in a few keystrokes, but it’s a cumbersome extra step compared to just closing all files…

Is anyone familiar with an easy way to close open notes without losing the pane structure?
