Currently, the default settings for File Recovery are 7 days and 5 minutes.
In my opinion, this is far too low as a default. And I see many users dealing with lost data. It should be the user’s responsibility to keep good backups of their data. But I think it would be great to make it safer for new users who are not aware of this yet.
I suggest increasing the default values. For example 30 to 60 days. Or even higher.
At the moment, it’s up to the user to increase the values. And this is likely at a time when they are new to Obsidian and unaware of this core plugin until something goes wrong, and they no longer have sufficient snapshots to do anything about it.
The other workaround is to use external version control, and other backup methods. Users absolutely should do this. But in reality, many don’t.
I have my history set to 600 days and 3 minute intervals. If you are a new user reading this, and you haven’t set it higher, I recommend you go do this right now! And if you aren’t backing up, please go do that now too. (sync is not backup, friends!)
