Should be in general configuration. Needed.
Seconding! (142nd-ing?)
Me too - I always end up with endless tabs with the same note. And its always opened in the top of the file, wich is really annoying on long notes. āNo Dupe Leavesā worked for a while but not anymore. Please consider implementing an option to change the default behavior.
I just discovered that quick switcher++ solves the problem for now. And it has some nice additional features.
I fully understand that Obsidian chooses browser-style tab management. While it is technically available, Iām just wondering when do people open several identical tabs at the same time in their browsers, especially you can only see one tab in a browser window at a time? The only situation I can think of is reading different parts of a long webpage simultaneously, but that also requires the tabs to be in different windows (or panes in Obsidian).
Actually, now that you mention it, Safari will take you to an existing open tab if you click a link outside of the browser. Clicking links inside the browser doesnāt do that, tho. Suggestions in the address bar that match an open tab will be labeled as such and take you to the tab if selected.
I do not understand why the Obsidian team are being so stubborn with this? Itās clearly a well requested feature and should be added as a preference option at least! They are fixated on using Obsidian like a browser but surely it IS more similar to a text-IDE than a browser window?
I would like the following functionality:
Clicking on a note from the sidebar - Opens the note in a new tab OR switches to the existing tab if it already exists
Opening a note with CTRL+O - Opens the note in a new tab (which it does already) OR switches to the existing tab if it already exists.
Clicking a link in a document - Opens the link in a new tab OR switches to the existing tab if it already exists
You can see where I am going with this. I donāt understand why they wonāt give this functionality even as a toggleable option, if they donāt want to make it default. But it should be part of the core?
A menu section that covers ālink behaviourā already exists - why canāt they add a few options that cover tab behaviour too?
+1 First post!
Obsidian is awesome in almost every way, apart from the tabs having history. In my mind Obsidian is more of an IDE than a Browser, if for no other reason than browsers donāt have a file list panel. The history nature of the tabs drives me around the bend. Iāve tried plugins but they tend to not work with search results or have other edge cases. We just need an option to turn off tab history and open in new tab or open existing.

Youāll notice a pattern around the forums. Thereās so many ignored feature requests that would have been implemented in the early days of Obsidian. Theyāve shifted drastically toward only working on features that improve monetization and lock-in.
I always want my note links to open in a new tab; Iām often struggling with short-term memory issues, and being able to see everything Iām working with is really crucial for me. I found a plugin to make notes always open in a new tab, but Iām surprised to find out this isnāt a default feature!
Lmao thanks to this thread I realised Iāve had Quick Switcher++ disabled ever since I installed it 2 years ago. Fantastic, now itās configured to override the default switcher and I can jump between open notes on my phone without losing the current note.
I use the pinned notes feature frequently for a very long note with multiple headings that I link to in other notes.
Having links (and the tag sidebar) at the very least understand that if you have a pinned note, you donāt want additional open versions of that note, seems like a very reasonable expectation to have about the UI, regardless of which style of navigation you favor.
Could we at least have a feature enhancement to looked for pinned notes before opening a link to a note in a new tab?
I would also like this. I was using the BRAT plugin āOpenerā to get around this behavior, but it was causing other issues so I had to uninstall it.
Peeps,
Iāve been using Obsidian for about five years, and Iāve always been frustrated with the default tab behaviour.
Iāve tried plenty of fixes. Mononote is⦠not bad? Decent-ish for keyboard shortcuts, but doesnāt really help me with mouse clicks (in my experience on macOS at least)ā¦
But then today I saw this Open Tab Settings plugin, and what a relief: it just works.
After tweaking a couple of options, now every link opens in a new tab, no matter the source: mouse clicks, Cmd/Ctrl+Enter, Quickswitcher, whatever. And it also optionally prevents duplicate tabs, so you can remove Mononote too (and it does that without the āgrace intervalā workaround that mononote uses.)
To be clear: I am not connected to the developer in any way, shape or form. Just happy to finally find a way of making Obsidian behave how I want it toā¦
+1 for this feature
This is badly needed and should be the default
I got used to it, if the feature gets implemented pls make it a toggle.
I would love to have this feature out of the box ![]()
Hey thanks for the tip! Iāve been using Mononote for a long time, but Open Tab Settings is even better! Seems to work pretty much perfectly now ![]()
