How Big a file should be?

how big a note i can make in obsidian and it won’t affect the performance of both note file and software’s activity like searching, linking.

80-250kb is big but they work. Live Preview rendering is fine; Obsidian handles rendering markdown content in sheets of lines intelligently.
Try to avoid large markdown tables; use Bases instead if possible.
Do not use base64 images if you can help it.

If you want to go for a really large file, be mindful that you can transclude file content from other files with ![[filename]],![[filename#heading]] and ![[filename#^blockID]] syntax.

this is enough of a solution for me. i am a heavy size depended. you see, did create small notes, but i saw this in obsidian website.

There are forum threads on the internet where people stress tested Obsidian with 100.000 files and it was working.

When you have a really large vault, the only concern is not keeping close to vanilla Obsidian settings. Meaning that if you have many large css files or an elaborate theme that may work okay with a small vault may in fact punish you on a large vault.
So in my main vault I use the default theme with minimal css to change the appearance.

It is also good practice to look into the Developer Console now and again to look for red line errors.
I recently got rid of File Explorer Plus and felt Obsidian lighter straight away.
So it’s css and plugins that can combine to slow down your vault, even if otherwise Obsidian itself would handle your size.

loved your comment. i had over 40 css snippet, and i got ride 20 of them. i still have 20 of them, though i planned to remove some of them, like the vault logo (currently keeping to identify my vault, i mean three different image for three different vault), or divider gradient. i just wanted to ask you how much css snippet can i use, so that i don’ feel legging.

As for community plugin. i depend less on them. i somehow ended up with 9 now that i see. it was only 5 before. i think i will get rid some of them as i need some other plugins really bad. since you are experienced, can you tell how many plugin i can use without any problem.

Light CSS can stay, mind you.
It’s the 40 kb larger ones that interfere with the main app’s css or DOM or whatever (I don’t know) that can slow down tab opening and closing, backlinks and search results etc.

I am on default theme as even Kepano’s Minimal Theme was slow on <Win? Linux? I don’t remember>.

Create a dummy file with 500-1000 backlinks and you can check performance.

that’s a great idea. i will clone my vault and try running 100 of plugins
but it’s hard to install all of them🙂

Now, the “solution” has nothing to do with the question.
All I’m saying is that Obsidian is capable but once you start throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it (Dataview, Tasks, Omnisearch, etc. that do their own indexing and css that alter markdown rendering fundamentally), performance can suffer and it depends on 1. size of vault 2. PC performance and short of deep diagnostic skills you can check for telling signs by 1. adding many tabs and opening and closing them 2. opening backlinks to see how fast the results come in etc.
As a rule, you don’t need to worry starting out with Obsidian but over time (2-3-5 years), you’ll need to remove stuff (and substitute them with other solutions) and introduce measures (Lazy Load plugins with AlanG’s plugin) you don’t know yet.

So, isn’t it just use and and you will know solution🙂 that’s what i thought when i marked solution
