Hiding the root(s) of nested tags?

I decided to nest my tags for better organization, but now I’m getting the full “path” for each tag.

for example, while I used to have a tag for “John” (“#john”), now I have the tag for John as “#people/john”. While that one isn’t too long, some have become a bit unwieldy. I’d like to be able to display tags just as “#john” even though it’s nested 1,2 or more levels deep.

If this isn’t possible, I’ll have to unnest them.
