Help with searching

Hi, I am one of the many people who are migrating from Evernote and I’m currently facing the tags vs links vs folders connumdrum for the 2000+ notes I will be importing soon.

Whilst I was a heavy user of tags in Evernote, I’d like to base my Obsidian vault on links if possible. However, important for me is the ability to be able to restrict searches to a subset of notes. I realise I can do this by searching within a specific folder, or within a specific tag, but I don’t believe I can if I simply use links. Can I?

As an example, lets say I have a whole bunch of notes on cars and another bunch of notes on wild cats (bear with me on this!). All notes are in root and no tags are in use. The car notes are linked to a note called ‘Cars’ and wild cat notes are linked to a note called ‘Wild Cats’. If I did a search for ‘jaguar’, the query would return notes for both jaguar cars and jaguar cats.

My question is, is it possible to restrict the search so it only showed results for say, cars (not cats)? The query would have to be something like, find all notes that mention ‘jaguar’, that are linked to the ‘Cars’ note.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried a Search string of jaguar -cats ? I know this is ignoring [[link]] relationships in notes, but it may work for you.

That may help, but I think I need something more robust/absolute if that makes sense.

Is it possible to delineate using links?

If not I think I will have to use tags to do this. I think they are better than using folders, mainly because they show up on the graph.
