Using 2 Macs and an iPhone. I recently set up Obsidian on 1 mac with the folder synced to Google Drive so Claude can have access. Created a vault and started adding a bunch of content. I then upgraded to get the sync feature so I can push to the other Mac and my iPhone.
I see GD isn’t natively supported on iOS. I’m still potentially early enough in, that I’m happy to switch over to iCloud.
What I read (more didn’t’ understand from the FAQ) was adding the vault. It seems I need to create a new vault? Is there a way to use the existing vault with sync or easily duplicate the existing one to sync?
Things I have tried
When I go to add a new vault and click setup for the ‘open vault from obsidian sync’ it says there are none.
I’m not 100% clear on which tools you are finalizing on. But if you meant Obsidian Sync, do not mix it along with another cloud sync tool. Choose only one, or it will likely cause data duplication or race conflicts. (I don’t have an answer for your main question.)
First, make a backup if you don’t already have a backup system. Backed up? Okay…
What you’ll end up having is four vaults, all synced with the same content.
You already have (1) your existing local vault on Mac A. (Since it’s in Google Drive, make sure the entire folder is set to “Make available offline”.)
When you synced with Obsidian Sync, you created (2) a remote vault on Obsidian Sync’s servers.
Next create (3) a new local vault on Mac B. (Make sure it is not in a location that Google Drive or iCloud syncs. Double syncing like that would be asking for data corruption or loss.) Sync that to the remote vault.
Then create (4) a new local vault on the iPhone. (Same here: Make sure it’s not in a location that another sync service is using among your devices.) Sync that to the remote vault.
I initially set the vault to reside within Google Drive, not realizing there was no support for syncing. Thinking this was the best place across tools (Obsidian, Claude, etc). Since I’m only a few days in, I’m open to use a better option (iCloud, Obsidian Sync, etc). But need to ensure tools like Claude can access that synced folder.

So you’re saying there’s no way to have a single vault available and syncable across multiple devices? Each device has to have its own vault but all will update a single ‘source of truth’ vault?
