Format text and Blocks in a list? Trouble with List Callout and other Plug-ins

I am returning to Obsidian and very impressed with the current program  . I am a novice, sophisticated in other programs, but ignorant about Obsidian.

What I’m trying to do

I am setting up some formatting for my best use of Notes.

I regularly write in outline format.

In Obsidian, that uses the Bulleted List feature. Afaik, this is built into Markdown, and is as robust in Obsidian as Markdown is.

I want to be able to color text or text background in my writing-with-lists.

Things I have tried

I tried the Plug-in “highlightr v.1.2.2.” The highlightr toolbar or pop-up shows rarely. Indented Blocks highlighted by highlightr become un-indented.

I tried the Plug-in “Editing Toolbar v.4.0.4 (upgraded today)“ This works and has a lot of utility. Again, indented Blocks with colored text background become un-indented and can’t be indented.

I just tried the Plug-in “List Callouts v.1.2.9” which has a slick way to create the appearance of a Callout in a Block in a list. I loved it. Many uses. Impressed. Brilliant. Then I somehow lost all the colors, and my bullets show as dashes.

Anything I use must be robust. I have used a system of Unicode-character-bracketing in the past. It doesn’t work as well, since it doesn’t use color, but as text-only, it is robust across programs.

I am well-aware some or most of this is user-inexperience. I am willing to do the work, as long as the flow is permanent.

Questions

Why did the list items formatted in color by the Plug-in List Callout fail? Afaict, this happened when I changed the list type of the top-level container-Block.

Can I return the List Callout colors and icons to the Blocks that have lost them? The text that I see in edit mode is the same: it still shows the “{FormattingCharacter}{space}” that, afaict, is what List Callout uses as a trigger to format the Block with an icon and a background color.

What is the best way to highlight or mark with a colored background Blocks in a list?

Do you have any other recommendations for setting up my Obsidian Vault to have robust, deft ways to format text and Blocks in a list?

TY. —Kirby.

Update. Mostly resolved.

I am still trying to fully understand this, but I have restored the List Callout formatting where it was lost.

I did this by removing from the top-level list item the list format (if it had been removed), and re-formatting it as a bullet list item. Once the top-level list item was formatted as a list item (I checked Checkbox as well as Bullet), and the indentation was 1-indent or fewer, the Blocks with the retained formatting “code” (“{TriggerCharacter}{space}”) were rendered with the List Callout formatting I expected.

Since this is recoverable and seemingly avoidable, I am satisfied with it’s robustness.

I would still appreciate any insight. .TY. —Kirby.
