Folder paths in MacOS, iOS and iPadOS

What I’m trying to do

This might be solved but I can’t quite articulate it in a way that’s good for searching so will explain.

Getting into bases so I can dump notion like a bad habit, my existing vault is setup with folders like this:

Vault

  • Writing
  • Reference
  • Templates

In this base I want it just to look at files in the Writing folder so I jump on my MacBook and setup a base then in the Filter for This View I set it to file path starts with “Vault/Writing” and the list of files is narrowed down. Ace.

I fire up my ipad later to have look, which uses iCloud to access the same vault and I look at the same base and it’s blank. No files, unless I amend the file path view to just “Writing” then the files show again. I go back to my MacBook, the base is blank again unless I add in the Vault folder back in.

I’m guessing this is down to how the different file systems work but is there a way around this so that the file path works on both systems?

Things I have tried

I search macOS iPadOS file path folders and a combination thereof but nothing that popped up was similar to this.

Help?

Have you compared the vault’s paths? They should both be iCloud > Obsidian > Vault, but it sounds like on the Mac you may have used the parent folder, iCloud > Obsidian.

If that’s the case you’ll want to remove it from the list of vaults on the Mac, then open Vault as a vault.

(Side note: I’m not sure if you’re using “Vault” as a placeholder name here or if that’s the Vault’s actual name. If it’s the actual name I suggest changing it to something more specific to avoid confusion.)

That was it! Never thought of that but it makes sense; MacBook is where I started using obsidian, iterated through a couple of vaults getting to know how to use it before settling on the one I have now. When I opened it on iOS must have gone straight to its folder, rather than the main obsidian folder like you say. Thank you!

And yeah’s that’s not what it’s called just placeholder names to show the structure
