I see new flash cards/spaced repetition plugins come out from time to time.
But they all seem to have missing one feature I was painstakingly creating for my cards in Anki. I think I’ve got the idea from somewhat similar feature of Memrise.
I’m speaking about the “third side” or a hint - something to have alongside with the revealed card
- regardless of what direction you go (front to back or back to front) - in scenarios such as language learning there should be symmetry between two sides, and extra information should not affect it;
- not necessarily a part of the knowledge - might be extra context but can also be anything for associative memory.
Workflow is like this:
- user presented with either a front or a back side and tries to recall the other side as usual;
- the opposite side is revealed as usual;
- the hint side is revealed either automatically with the opposite side or after extra click.
Because making and managing perfect cards in Anki is such a pain - I stopped using it. But I need to get back to language learning, hopefully better equipped.
All spaced repetition apps and plugins I see that are not Anki - simply recreate the paper cards experience. Knowledge of a better way poisons my ability to use them.
Rolling yet another spaced repetition app/plugin is not any high in my projects list, so I’d prefer one of the authors of such plugins appreciate this idea.
