File, folder names with spaces, vowel mutations (German Umlaute) not good?

Can, should one use file and folder names with spaces, German Umlauts, ä, ü, ö and ß)? On Windows. Or is it better to use hyphens, ae, ue, oe, ss underscores, etc.?

I think the only open issue regarding umlauts, etc., in path names is this one at the moment:

Linux: Images and PDFs don't load if vault contains accented letters such as é (non english, non ascii, cjk, Umlauts)

You mentioned you are using Windows, so if Linux isn’t in the mix of your devices, this won’t affect you.

I use transliterated Sanskrit in my content, which has tons of diacritics, and I’ve never had an issue using them in folder or file names. The only place I’ve found they do not work is when assigning an ID to a block in a note. So something like ^ātma would have to be ^atma.

So those diacritics are obviously not (fully) implemented (yet). But it might also just be a bug.

OK, so overall, there don’t seem to be any issues (with umlauts, spaces, or capitalization), apart from a few rare exceptions. Great—it’s much more convenient to use them in file and folder names and easier to read than underscores or replacement characters. Above all, they’re much easier to find using the search function.
