@WhiteNoise That’s what I plan to do.
@ariehen Thanks for more data points. They don’t go a long with my (long) experience, but are appreciated.
If you need to keep this setting on for whatever reason, I would move the vaults one level up and out of reach of iCloud Drive. e.g.
As to your advice, that is exactly what I suggested yesterday myself, experimented with and will stick with.
One question remains:
I had not changed any iCloud Sync settings, any Obsidian settings for a long time. This week, it stopped working for me, causing me to initiate this thread. We seem to have found workarounds. Is the best answer to the question’s this:
Don’t use two syncing systems in parallel even if seems to have worked for years.
I didn’t see it mentioned above, but were you using Obsidian Sync as well with that vault? Yeah, that can cause issues.
I’ll see if Desktop and Document sync is mentioned in the help docs anywhere and suggest an addition if it’s not.
As for why it was working fine for a while and suddenly not… it’s hard to say. When the latest macOS came out (10.14 Sonama, I believe), there were multiple reports here of vaults disappearing. The update caused iCloud Drive to flush everything to the cloud if optimize mac storage was on (even if it hadn’t previously).
For the purpose of tracking down the root cause I stopped my Obsidian sync (and deactivated theme, plugins etc.). So a double sync is not part of the problem which persisted after I deactivated Obsidian sync.
Funny though, I did not seem to have explicitly mentioned that I had Obsidian sync. I apologize for this omission.
My “preliminary assumptions” above point to some iCloud sync zombie files that cause Obsidian’s file access to time out. You did not take this point up then, would you care to elaborate on this now? Even if not, I will consider my problem to be solved for now.
