Hello Obsidian Team,
I would like to propose an improvement regarding vault access on iPadOS, specifically for users relying on self-hosted or internal cloud storage solutions.
Core Issue
While Obsidian on macOS allows full flexibility in choosing where vaults are stored (including self-hosted cloud services, NAS systems, or alternative sync tools), this flexibility is not available on iPadOS.
Many users, including myself, use internal or self-hosted cloud services for data storage and backup (e.g., private servers, NAS, or enterprise cloud environments). On iPadOS, these storage locations can often be accessed through the Files app, but Obsidian cannot properly open and manage these folders as full vaults.
Impact
This creates a major limitation:
- Vaults stored in internal or self-hosted cloud systems cannot be edited on iPad
- Cross-device workflows (Mac ↔ iPad) are disrupted
- Users are effectively forced to rely on iCloud or Obsidian Sync
This contradicts one of Obsidian’s key strengths: full user control over data and storage location.
Suggested Direction
I understand iPadOS imposes technical restrictions, but I would like to suggest exploring:
-
Improved support for Files-based providers
Enable stable vault access from third-party storage providers integrated via the iOS Files app (including self-hosted services). -
Persistent folder access (security-scoped bookmarks)
Allow users to select external folders and maintain long-term access permissions. -
Better compatibility with self-hosted sync solutions
Even partial or experimental support would be valuable for advanced users. -
Transparent documentation
Clear communication on what is technically possible (and what is not) regarding self-hosted storage on iPadOS.
Why This Matters
For many users, especially in professional or privacy-focused environments, self-hosted storage is essential. Enabling reliable access to such vaults on iPadOS would significantly improve Obsidian’s cross-platform usability and reinforce its philosophy of data ownership.
Thank you for your work and consideration.
Best regards,
Ben
