I’m new to Obsidian, but I’ve been using it to map out branching stories (text on cards connected by arrows). I want to export the canvas I’m using as an image file, which has worked for more basic story maps. However, there’s more text on the cards in my current canvas, and when I export it as an image, the text on the cards doesn’t show up. The cards show up as grey blocks. I don’t think the canvas is very large - it’s around 18 tiles.
Is there some setting I’m missing that will let me export the canvas as an image without obscuring the text? I want to be able to share the file with other people in a way that’s easy to scan through, but I don’t want it to be editable.
Switch to the default theme (if you are not using it already).
Disable any CSS snippets (if you have any).
Enable Restricted mode and restart or reload the vault (reloading should happen automatically with recent versions of Obsidian).
Export the Canvas.
If the issue persists, you could paste your “Debug info” in here (cmd/ctrl + p → Show debug info). Then folks will have a better idea of your setup and may be able to offer more suggestions or tips on what to do next.
If ariehen’s suggestions don’t help, can you share a screenshot of your export settings?
Make sure you’ve selected Viewport = “Full Canvas”. And make sure “Privacy mode” is not checked. If the images look like this, you’ve likely checked privacy on.
You might also have to experiment with a higher zoom setting, which will make the image bigger and the text higher resolution.
The zoom setting helped! Specifically, under Settings > Canvas > Zoom threshold for hiding card content. The default was set too low, and setting it higher made the text show up on the exported image. However, the text is too blurry to be readable (reference image below) - is there some way of increasing the image quality?
Understood! I believe you are talking about the settings in the image below. It won’t let me change the zoom settings, unfortunately. It says “0.30” wherever I hover on the bar, and won’t let me drag the slider or click elsewhere on the bar.
Oh interesting. Maybe there is a maximum resolution and you’ve reached it. When I did my test, the zoom setting was at the middle by default. But that canvas was a lot smaller than yours!
It might not be convenient. but you might need to export out individual segments at a time with the “viewport only” option.
Or if you’re willing, write a feature request asking to lift the maximum. (Assuming that is the issue. Maybe test a smaller canvas to confirm the option works for you there.)
