Encountered discontinuous latex highlighting. What is it?

What I’m trying to do

As you can see in the appended image, I have encountered a weird highlight/selection. I write a lot of latex and very rarely encounter this highlighting. I want to know what it is and how to reproduce it.
The highlight is characterized by discontinuity, as unlike a normal text selection, individual symbols seem to be highlighted separately (Selected: `R`,` = `, `\`, `{`, `\`, `}`, `)`.). For some reason, whitespace doesn't count as a symbol or something (as you see the ` = ` snippet isn't divided into 3 highlights). Normal text selection has square borders for me, and this highlighting has round borders instead.
If I remember correctly, after showing up, the highlighting would continue to highlight every symbol until I clicked away.

Things I have tried

I have attempted to reproduce the highlight by going through all the obsidian hotkeys to no avail. The highlight isn't a highlight from the search function (search function highlight looks yellow to me and is continuous).
I believe the highlighting may have something to do with the latex suite plugin.

It seems that I shouldn’t have deleted the html blocks when making this post. The text under the first 2 sections is:
