Use case or problem
Note that I am completely open to other ways of achieving these results, so any information would be appreciated.
Context for Problem:
I am trying to set up a reference system for the Bible in Obsidian. Since it’s a long and complex series of books with chapter references and individualized numbers for verses, this makes this complex. Right now I added the entire Bible with the “My Bible” plugin, which works like this:
- My Bible/Book/Chapter → And in each chapter, each verse is written with it’s number serving as an H6 heading to make it easier to reference.
The Problem:
- I cannot embed multiple headings or a range of headings in one note. This means that I’m stuck either embedding the whole note (which is long) or a single heading (which is not sufficient).
Previous failed solution:
- The Link Range plugin is 2 years old and buggy. The title of the linked note actually obscures the embedded content.
The obvious sidestep that I want to avoid:
- Yes I used to reference online Bible material with other plugins. However, that prevents me from finding connections between verses using Obsidian’s #1 strong suit: in-house linking. The whole reason I did this was to try and reel it back into Obsidian.
Proposed solutions
1) Add non dynamic ranges to header-level embeds.
Surely other scholars are dealing with this problem as well. Why not add a feature that allows for a range to be typed into your normal embed and then pop it up? Making it non-dynamic (particularly in read mode) would prevent lag from excessive embeds while still allowing more precise embeds to be had in-house.
2) Add dynamic ranges to header-level embeds.
Make it to where you can interact with embeds to see more or less information. This might slow your computer a bit, but it will feel very nice with the current standard of UI I notice in obsidian.
How these apply in other scenarios:
Imagine you have inputted reference material and sources into your obsidian; now you can more accurately embed the areas you desire to reference. Imagine you have a series of recipes, but the recipe cards include unnecessary information when you cook; now you can embed the range of Ingredients and Directions in one note! Let’s say you don’t want to reference a whole note, but you have two or more headings of equal titular value that must be included in the embed. Now this can be done in one move.
Current Work around
- Currently I’m embedding each small part individually in the file, but this takes time (which means I can’t use this for notes at church) AND it makes the software laggy if I do this too much.
Related feature requests (optional)
- add ranges to header level embeds
- a general format for specifying links to a part of note multiple paragraphs ranges embedding multiple consecutive headings or blocks
