Hello! I am brand new to Obsidian and I was trying to increase the size of the window that pops up when you hover over a link to a pdf.
I saw a post that said that you could do this by pressing ctrl>Shift>i and finding where to increase the size. Well as soon as I opened that window up my mouse accidentially selected a bunch of things, then I tried deselecting something or other and when I did I saw the note that I had open resize or change or something, not really sure what I saw, just something.
Anyway, it was a totally unimportant note that I had all of my practice markdown notes jotted in like different size headers and such. The note seems to look fine, not that I really care, I can just delete it and start another practice note.
My main question is, if I did alter, delete or deselect something in that inspection window, is there the possibility that it will affect my other note? (I currently only have one other note started and I could easily restart that one as well if needed). Is there the possibility that if there were in fact changes made, that it could affect future notes or even vaults?
I could easily start a new vault and a new note if that is what is best. I would like to get more familiar with some of these CSS changes down the road because of how useful it could be, but right now I am just starting to learn the basic ways to use markdown.
Thanks for any help!
It’s difficult to tell what happened from this explanation. You selected some stuff in the developer tools? I really don’t know, but it’s possible any changes you made there might reset if you refresh or restart Obsidian.
If something did change, I think we’d need to see screenshots to better understand.
I’ll just make a few points that might help if you think you changed or corrupted a note:
- There is a “File Recovery” plugin that keeps snapshots of your notes. I recommend going to the settings now and increasing the history length, and lowering the snapshot interval. If anything ever goes wrong, this can help restore a note. I keep 600 days worth of snapshots (most people might think is way higher than needed.)
- Make sure you keep good backups. Obsidian uses files stored on your computer, which gives you great control. But it means you need to take responsibility to backup your files, just like any important files on your computer.

Thank you! I am not too worried about it because I had only just started the very basic outline of my first note.
Is there a possibility that from that screen (I was in a note and then entered the css inspection window) I could change something globally across all of Obsidian?
I guess my main concern is that I have changed something that could corrupt notes in the future? Should I just delete the program and re-install it just to be sure, since I have nothing of value there yet?
I’ll just add that depending on where you clicked it could be harmless. For example, in the Styles tab
you could uncheck everything, delete whole sections, etc., and Obsidian will shift around strangely. Your notes will look pretty odd if visible at all. Same for in the Elements tab.
Closing-opening the vault or running the Reload app without saving
command will reset everything to how it should be.
