Default folder (suggestion) for new files

Use case or problem

When creating a new file, the file is created in the top level of the vault. I use folders to organize files, and each time I create a new file, I have to move it to the appropriate folder lest I forget. Also, moving a file throuth the hierarchy is doable on a PC client (Linux/Windows/…) with a large screen and a mouse, but it is a bit of a chore on a tablet or a smartphone.

Proposed solution

There should be an obvious way of creating a file in a particular folder.

  1. Provide a sensible default, let the user change it later
    1. If a folder is selected - create the file in that folder
    2. If a file is selected - create the file as a sibling of the selected file
  2. Provide the user with a sensible set of choices for a folder: When a file is created, …
    1. … suggest the folder that is currently selected and/or
    2. … suggest the last three or five folders most recently used

Current workaround (optional)

No real workaround. Create the file, write into it, forget to move it into its folder, have a lot of unsorted files at the top level of the Vault

Daily Notes and Unique Note Creator can both have their own location set.

There is also a setting for default location for all new notes. Including a setting for “same folder as current file”

The way you worded your FR sounds you were not aware of either of these options?

There are also community plugins that can create files in particular places.

Also if you use Quick Switcher and type a folder location plus note name it will put the note there.

Another option is to right click or long press the folder in the file browser and choose “New note”.

That was indeed the case! I now found these options, and they provide the functionality that I asked for. Thanks for the hint!
