A few months ago I released **csvzall** , a CSV viewer and editor for Obsidian. I’ve always wanted spreadsheet-like features (including graphs) in Obsidian without necessarily embedding an Excel spreadsheet. Most importantly, I wanted to abide by the Obsidian spirit of using open data formats.

While it was great to read the initial feedback from excited users, I knew it could be better, so I’ve been making improvements which I’m happy to share today.

## CSV + SQLite: Now with Table and Scalar Value Exports

This is the one I’m the proudest of sharing. I’ve always wanted to have the power of Excel formulas in Obsidian, but without the baggage or need to be tied to a spreadsheet.

### Run SQLite queries against CSVs

In the latest version, you can enter **SQLite query** mode and run standard SQLite queries against any CSV file using `data` as the table name.

The `csvzall`-embedded version of SQLite also enables many useful mathematical, data-handling, and text manipulation functions (such as regex matching).

You may notice a button that says “Insert into note”, which leads me to the next section.

### Code-Block-Based Exports

I added a feature where you can use code blocks to export the results of SQL queries to your notes. The table name is the path to your CSV file encased in double quotes, relative to your note. By default, all exports are updated whenever a CSV is changed.

### Comment-Based Exports

Alternatively, `csvzall` can track exports using HTML comments, which are hidden in reading mode. (The query definition is stored in the plugin’s data.json file.)

In addition to supporting table exports like the code-block-based exports, scalar values (numbers, text strings, etc.) are also supported. I like this functionality because it’s like being able to embed Excel formulas anywhere in your notes.

## csvzall Lite: Plain CSV Viewing + Editing for Desktop and Mobile

**Link:** Look for “csvzall Lite” in the attached plugin posting (or directly in Obsidian’s plugin search)

Obviously, on our cell phones, we don’t really want to be managing SQL queries. We just need a basic editor and viewer for basic data entry. Furthermore, many users just want a simple solution for their desktop notebooks as well.

**csvzall Lite** was built for those people. It’s simple and lightweight, and runs using JavaScript and WebAssembly.

Technical details: It uses the same C++ library as the full-featured plugin, but without the graphing or SQLite add-ons. The C++ code is compiled to **WebAssembly** so it can run inside Obsidian without a helper executable.

## Other Updates

There were a lot of updates since the original launch post, including:

- Bundled binary: Previous versions required downloading a native executable. This now comes pre-bundled.
- Graph fixes: When there were lots of items on the x-axis, labels could overlap with each other. This has been fixed by rotating labels when collisions are detected.
- Greater CSV flexibility:
  - `.csv` and `.tsv` extensions are now both handled
  - Previous versions would silently reformat all files to use `,` and `"` by default. Now, we respect the currently detected format. Users can still manually reformat non-standard CSV files.
  - Improved handling of CSV files without a header row and with arbitrary row lengths

Apologies for not being able to include a direct URL. I have mainly been posting on `r/obsidian` and I guess I ran into a “newbie” restriction.
