CSS to highlight string matches in editor and preview

Things I have tried

Haven’t tried anything yet because I’m not sure how to get started.

What I’m trying to do

I’d like to automatically highlight/color strings in documents. I consistently use a custom syntax mixed with Markdown and would like to call out the terms sprinkled through documents. I think this might be possible with custom CSS but have not found any examples to follow. Any pointers would be appreciated.

To highlight a string: Select the string and press the equal key = twice.

I may have not been clear enough. I’m looking to automatically apply a color highlight to string patterns in a document dynamically and in real-time. A simplified scenario would be to color the word “dog” when surrounded by white space characters but to not color “dogwood”
