Seriously every time I go looking for why can’t i figure out this thing that must be a feature obsidian has because it’s so obviously part of it’s philosophy or extremely basic I end up finding a years long feature request where everyone ends up because they also assume it’s basic function… another +1

Canvas and linking seems to really be disconnected. Please address this

After utilizing Obsidian for several months, I discovered a use case for my initial Canvas (with backlinks being a part of this use case) - I’m quite surprised I stumbled upon this topic.

Here’s a bit more context: I aim to employ the canvas to visualize how my servers and infrastructure interact with one another. Without backlinks, I still need to link in the actual notes, which negates my use case. Therefore, I support this suggestion.

Backlinks from Canvas that are referencing notes seems like a basic feature to implement, and it would be essential to me!
I am quite amazed that this topic is almost 2 years old and the feature is not implemented yet…
@Obsidian team, is anyone listening?

very important feature for me

I was considering to donate towards this software but seeing this issue open for two years makes me think this is a bad investment.
What could possibly be more important for a note taking app to properly and efficiently take notes? And why was there always something more important these two whole years?

What are you? Gnome Developers?

This is a huge part of the obsidian experience. Canvas just doesn’t feel integrated without backlink support. It also prevents a lot of creatures in many plugins like another quick switcher.

I think this is a necessary feature. As it stands, canvas feels disconnected from the rest of Obsidian and that greatly limits my ability to use it. It’s especially important because I’m often in the situation where I’m cleaning out my vault and debating whether or not to delete a note or attachment. I’ll delete it because it shows there are no links and it is orphan, only to later discover that it was embedded in a canvas. Overall a frustrating experience.

Canvas really needs feature parity here to be most useful. Any idea how soon this can be added?

Better canvas-graph integration really should be a thing. At the absolute minimum, canvases should not be part of the “Attachments” toggle in graph view. They have much more in common with notes than pictures or video.

This lack of integration strays from established behavior when utilizing internal links, is unintuitive, and undermines Obsidian’s biggest strength—as a tool for linking things together.

I am also surprised to see that this feature is not part of how Canvas work with the other notes. I’m adding a vote for this feature.

I’m new to Obsidian from OneNote, and Canvas is the only thing I use in Obsidian. It’s disappointed to see Canvas seems like an unfinished feature.

Hi everyone! I’m excited to announce the release of a new Advanced Canvas update (3.6.0) featuring full metadata cache support for canvas files. This enhancement brings the features requested in this post to the Canvas:

  1. Embedded file nodes and links within text nodes are now automatically recognized as outgoing links of the Canvas file.
  2. Graph, outgoing links and backlinks Integration: Canvas files now fully participate in Obsidian’s graph view, outgoing links and backlinks ecosystem.
  3. Edge Relationships (Toggleable): Treat an edge connection between two file nodes as an outgoing link (for the originating node’s file) and a backlink (for the consequent node’s file).

These changes significantly improve canvas file integration with Obsidian’s core features, offering better visualization of relationships and more comprehensive note-linking capabilities.

Please feel free to open an issue if you have any suggestions or questions. And as requested by the mods, please don’t post them inside this thread. Thanks
