What I’m trying to do
I’m trying to write inline math, like ( w_k ), but it renders as ( w_k ), exactly like this.
Things I have tried
I’ve tried changing the format to $w_k$, and it worked. I’m puzzled by the other way didn’t work.

Hi. See this Obsidian Help article to get familiar with the different formatting available to your notes Basic formatting syntax - Obsidian Help
As you can note in the article, super and subscripts are not available formatting syntax in Obsidian. However you can get super and subscripts inside math blocks as noted in Advanced formatting syntax - Obsidian Help
You can assign a keyboard shortcut to Insert math block
or Toggle inline math
commands, see Hotkeys - Obsidian Help
MathJax doesn’t work well with live preview. I recommend using source mode if you write mathematical notes, see Edit and preview Markdown - Obsidian Help. Note also that you cannot get automatic equation numbering but there is a community plugin called LaTeX-like Theorem & Equation Referencer which tries to implement it.
Using \( w_k \)
is not supported by Obsidian, you do need to do $ w_k $
for inline rendering of math.
