Could you post another screenshot of the properties without the context menu open? What is in the properties fields themselves?
I may have figured it out. It would still be helpful to see your actual properties, but because the property type is LIST it changes the underlying formatting if you look at it in plain markdown.
For example:
Category:
- Ideas
- Conference-2026
If you then right click on the Category property and try and change the type it will be impossible because the formatting is not compatible with other types. So you need to change it to something like
Category: "Ideas, Conference-2026"
and then you can change the property type to whatever you like.

No, I meant a screenshot of the properties where that greyed-out menu actually appears. With an empty properties field that menu doesn’t appear.

But the fields is not empty. I’ve tried both the `tag` function and `cssclasses`, and in both cases the drop-down menu is grayed out and cannot be selected. I also tried adding a reference tag anyway, but the result is always the same.
tags and cssclasses are bultin properties of type list, you cannot change them.

I found the problem was the Magnet app on my Mac conflicting. I reinstalled Obsidian and it works now. Thanks everyone
