I think this is intended - if you have folding enabled, the editor’s “gutter” element will be persistent on screen so as to avoid suddenly appearing out of nowhere when something can be folded.
If you find the spacing to be too big, it shouldn’t be too hard to change with a CSS snippet.
I do agree though that the preview and editor should look more like each other in that - we will make changes to the next version to normalize the spacing and icon size.
