Use case or problem
I would like to use my iPhone Home Screen as an at-a-glance dashboard for important information from my Obsidian vault.
For example, I often have notes containing daily checklists, project tasks, study plans, or other information that I need to see frequently.
Currently, the workflow is unnecessarily indirect. I need to create the note, add it to my bookmarks, and then configure the View Note widget to point to that bookmark.
More importantly, the current widget does not provide the same experience as actually viewing the note in Obsidian. This makes it difficult to use it as a persistent dashboard for tasks or other frequently accessed information.
Proposed solution
Allow the View Note widget to display a rendered/read-only version of the selected note directly on the iOS Home Screen.
The widget could allow the user to:
- Select any note directly from the vault, without requiring a bookmark.
- Render basic Markdown formatting such as headings, lists, and checkboxes.
- Automatically refresh when the underlying note changes.
- Open the note in Obsidian when the widget is tapped.
Additionally, a dedicated Tasks widget would be very useful. It could display unchecked tasks from the vault and ideally allow users to check them off directly from the widget.
For example:
Add Widget → Select Note → Done
or:
Add Widget → Tasks → Show pending tasks
This would make Obsidian much more useful as an iOS Home Screen dashboard, especially for daily tasks, project checklists, study plans, and other information that needs to remain visible throughout the day.
Current workaround
The current workaround is to create a bookmark for the note and then configure the View Note widget to use that bookmark.
There are also community scripts that can provide similar functionality, but they require additional configuration.
