Best way to store images in obsidian?

I honestly think obsidian for diagram based note takers wasn’t a good idea.

This was my workflow:

  • I make an image

  • I paste it on obsidian

  • Then it’ll go to attachments folder under my vault that I set up using Files & Links in settings tab.

Great

But I used a plugin obsidian://show-plugin?id=image-converter And I set up process all images in it and it renamed all the images improperly. LOL. And my links are broken although images are still there. Based on the feedback I got from obsidain reddit, Obsidian really is not a right note taking app for someone who likes to attach images.

Then I thought to put them into imgur like this

And this was again a bad idea. What if imgur starts to delete old photos.

This led me to the conclusion that I need a better note taking app suited for images. Or a better way to host my images that is future proof. Some ideas I’m having are to host them on google drive but I use obsidian on my work provided laptop(that can be used for personal use as well) & I don’t login my google in office laptop.

Or I’d wnat something that embeds the image directly into the note file like google docs.

Note:

  • Making images in plantuml/mermaid is not feasible for me as I’ve to learn “how to take note” before learning for exam. Even with chatgpt, deepseek making accurate images is a hassle.

  • I don’t make physical notes anymore because it’s time consuming, harder to search, change and preserve as well.

BTW is it time I need a tablet/pad & pen? I am starting to feel like it is.

Is tabs/pads (I can afford only android tablets like mi pad 7 and its pen) worth it for obsidian if I write critical diagrams. Basically diagrams in my notes are sometimes the crux of the notes when they’re there. I can’t afford to miss them.

In my absolute honest opinion, obsidian should let process images natively.

There are settings to that plugin. But one must beware with adding or having images generated with scripts with Obsidian open and that plugin enabled…

Obsidian is a markdown editor. Anything to do with images will be done with external plugins, probably always.

As for how and what to use, it depends on the volume. I think you are fine with 3000-5000 jpg images in the vault. Any sync option will handle that much.
For the other options, search the forum, for plugins to do with image hosting and cloud usage.

I use plantUML and sometimes mermaid.
For drawing, there is Excalidraw.
There is another plugin recently advertised with which you can draw straight onto the md note. I forget the name.

You have a lot of questions. Spend time on the forum, research your options.

What did you expect them to get named to, and what did they get named to? Can you show an example?

Does that plugin not cause links to the note to be updated? Or did it update the links to something with a syntax error? Or did you maybe just find a bug or settings issue in the plugin that might have an easy answer?

I processed all images using that plugin and it appended .original at last and changed the resolution which was seen on name. eg. img.original_452x753
