What I’m trying to do
Automate vault backups to a local drive and/or Dropbox.
- This is partly for safety backup and partly to make files available on computers without Obsidian.
- I run Obsidian on several computers and rely heavily on Obsidian sync.
Things I have tried
I’m currently using GoodSync to back up local vaults from my desktop (Mac mini) to Dropbox when it sees a a file change. I also can set this to run nightly.
My problem is that GoodSync runs on my desktop, and I frequently run Obsidian on my personal and work laptops, a tablet, and a virtual machine I remote into for work. My desktop is always available but not always running Obsidian, and I need to wake it up periodically to force a sync. It’s not a huge hassle, but it seems like there should be a better approach.
- I could run GoodSync from my laptop instead, since I use that every day, and I’m backing up to Dropbox, not a local drive.
- I see there are alternative sync plugins for WebDAV, which could conceivably work.
- I’m wondering if there is a WebDAV or SFTP interface for Obsidian vaults synced to the cloud. GoodSync could connect to either of those directly and not be dependent on me syncing my vaults on a particular computer.
- If I really wanted to geek out, I could probably set a chron job to run Obsidian and open both of my vaults on my desktop every night before the GoodSync backup job runs.
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.
