AutoIcons — automatic icons for every file and folder

AutoIcons gives every file and folder in your file explorer an icon — automatically. Describe what you want once, and every current and future file gets the right icon on its own. No decorating items one by one.

Icons are resolved in priority order:

  1. Frontmatter — add icon: lucide-rocket to a note, or use the Set icon for current file command with a searchable picker that writes it for you
  2. Custom rules — match by path, extension, name, or regex; target files, folders, or both; first match wins, drag to reorder
  3. File-type icons — images, audio, video, PDF, canvas, code, and Excalidraw drawings, out of the box
  4. Default icons — configurable fallbacks for notes and folders, so the whole vault is iconed the moment you enable it

All icons come from Obsidian’s built-in Lucide set, so they match your theme in light and dark mode. No network requests, no telemetry — nothing leaves your vault.

How is this different from Iconize? Iconize is great for hand-picking icons per item. AutoIcons is the opposite philosophy: rule-driven and zero-effort — set it once and future files icon themselves.
