I’ve searched for similar reports, but only found issues about syncing files, settings, files deleting themselves or duplicating due to sync issues.
FYI I’m running MacOS 14.5, and Obsidian 1.6.5 - now I have installer 1.6.5, I did have 1.4.6 (IIRC, not 100% sure of the final digit) at the time this happened.
I’m not making a bug report because since I updated the installer, the issue has stopped, and I’ve been unable to reproduce it (though I’m no expert).
I’m sharing it here as a record of what happened in case anyone else has a similar experience. It looks like a bug to me, but I’m happy to receive any feedback.
What I’m trying to do
I have a main vault with hundreds of files, connected to Sync, no problem. Lets call it PERSONAL. It has plugins and custom CSS, about 1.5GB of content including photos etc. It lives on my laptop and syncs to my phone. All good.
I created a new separate empty vault on my laptop (separate name, local folder and encryption password in Sync), to share notes with a colleage. Let’s call it WORK for ease. I sent an invitation to share it (still pending because they’ve not seen the email I guess).
When I enabled Sync in the empty WORK vault, it immediately started syncing the contents of my PERSONAL vault to the local laptop WORK folder (it’s already on another folder on the machine (one is not contained within another or anything like that, they’re not nested vaults), and I paused it because I didn’t want all of that content duped, and I was concerned if I deleted it, since it Synced from my PERSONAL vault, perhaps deleting it in WORK would also remove it from PERSONAL.
My PERSONAL vault was open at the time I set up the WORK vault, on my laptop.
Things I have tried
I searched here and on Reddit for similiair reports. I would expect 2 vaults with different encryption passwords to remain completely separate, no crossing of streams. It feels like a personal security issue, I don’t want colleagues reading my personal journals if they decide to copy themselves across like this, etc.
I looked on the bug submitting page, and as a result manually updated my installer to 1.6.5 as recommended, and re-enabled Sync, and there was no more copying of notes from one vault to the other. I’m not sure if that or something else stopped it.
I’m hoping that has solved the problem, and I’m not sure how to determine what caused it. But there you go, that’s what happened, for the record.
I have tested deleting files in WORK that were duplicated by Sync from PERSONAL by making a copy of a note and then deleting the original in WORK, but it still seems to remain in PERSONAL, so I feel a bit more secure with it. Perhaps the connection between the files has been broken.
Hopefully you see the problem, and understand my concern that this could happen at all.
I’m happy to answer any questions or take any thoughts (or not, either way).
Many thanks for reading.
