Though it’s rarely searched as it’s all about opening the file directly. But unruly filenames can be confusing, and it would be nice to be able to name them. Most of the mentioned image editing features have not been implemented yet either, and I’m not sure what exactly the team has been working on all these years. Images can’t be zoomed in and out, rotated, changed for transparency, or cropped. And of course, they can’t be renamed. These are the most basic features, we’re not asking for a Photoshop.
You can rename images, same as any others file, in the file browser or while you view the file standalone.
