Ok, found my mistake - I thought that dropsync was a completely separate sync service from dropbox, but I’ve realized that it’s complimentary to Dropbox, sync’ing files from dropbox to the phone file system so that obsidian can work with them.
Leaving this here so that hopefully others can learn from my oversight
