A New Major Disaster!

What I’m trying to do

Based on the problem I have with the Paste URL Into Selection failing on a large note, I then decided to break the note up into smaller notes using Extract from Note Composer.

The first problem I run into is that when in Edit mode, you can not scroll past the bottom of the window. The text I’m trying to select is longer than that.

So then I go into reading mode, where scrolling does work. I selected the text.

The next problem is that the documentation says to use Extract only in Editing mode. So now I can’t use Note Composer to extract the text.

OK, so I’ll MANUALLY extract the text into a new note.

So I select the text and go over to the new note and paste it.

Now the disaster:

At the start of the selected text is a link. After I copy the text to the new note, the link is BROKEN.

But we’re not done yet!

I delete the new note, intending to try again.

I go back to the original note - and ALL THE LINKS in the selected text - but not the rest of the note - ARE BROKEN. They appear as [obj]linkword[obj] - I can’t represent it well here.

The starting link has an extra bracket in front of it so that the entire paragraph following it is highlighted as if it was a link. Removing that leading bracket fixes that link but all the others in the selection are completely trashed.

It’s a mess. It appears to have double copied the entire first half of the selection twice. That part was where the other links were messed up. In the first half the links are still good.

I cleaned up the link and tried to copy again. This time it only copied the section once, but it still screwed up the initial link. In addition, a table which was part of the selection was not properly copied - the text was copied but not in table format.

Things I have tried

Everything. This thing is just broken. Trying to copy a link with a simple select and copy and paste just doesn’t work.

I copied the first paragraph with the link and this time it copied OK. BUT then I copied the next paragraph and it turned the first sentence into a LINK in the new note!

I am extremely irritated. I have a lot of stuff I need to extract due to this note being too long for Obsidian to work properly and now it will take the rest of the day to do so.

Have you tried disabling all plugins, snippets, and themes?

If you copy and paste the note into the sandbox vault, does the same thing happen?

What is your debug info? CMD/CTRL + P > debug > copy and paste here.

I’d suggest a descriptive topic title going forward. “A New Major Disaster!” doesn’t describe the issue.

If the topic title is clear (the best you can do), perhaps folks with knowledge in that area would spot it and be willing to jump in to help.

I wonder if it is similar to this issue with callouts. If so, it should be fixed in 1.6.4

I just extracted all the text using an external text editor - much more efficient. I don’t have time to debug Obsidian. From now on, when something doesn’t work, I’ll just find another way to do it by any means necessary.

This really sounds like a plugin interaction. I do sometimes see weird behaviour when I’ve had Obsidian open for ages without a restart. Text starts acting weird around Dataview Metadata but disabling the plugin and others doesn’t fix it. A plugin reload sometimes does, but a restart always does. Less common since the most recent upgrade :crossed_fingers:
