A dedicated Footnotes pane (similar to Tags, Properties, Links, etc)

Use case or problem

Hiya team,

Given you’re spending some time in v1.6.0 to enrich the Footnotes feature, now felt like the right time to raise this enhancement!

Footnotes are so so vital for research projects. And if they could have their own native pane/sidebar window so they’re always visible (i.e. like the Tags pane, All properties pane, etc), that would. Be. EPIC

Proposed solution

Rather than only having the footnotes pinned to the bottom of the page, the same view is available on the side so you can see them without having to scroll down to the bottom of the active page

If I’m citing from, say, 30 different sources and then copy/paste a quote from one of the papers, I can’t remember which attribution number is associated with which source unless scrolling down to the bottom

Current workaround (optional)

None. Apparently there’s a plugin that may be able to help with this, but I use Obsidian exclusively OOTB (no plugins or custom themes)

Thanks a lot!

Also, it might just me but if [^1] is displayed as 1, will be perfect.Same as reading view

Nice idea. It could be very useful. It is a quick way to access footnotes.

Show some love for this request :raised_hands:

I’d take a simple “Footnote section header” toggle in settings which would replace the current horizontal line that divides footnotes from the rest of the note. This would allow:

  1. To quickly navigate to footnotes via the Outline pane
  2. To quickly fold the footnotes section
